Despite Cowboys owner Jerry Jones publicly commenting that head coach Wade Phillips would remain with the team through the 2010 season, after the year began with a 1-7 record, Jones fired Phillips on November 8, 2010. Assistant coach Jason Garrett was named the interim head coach. It was the first time since purchasing the team in 1989 that Jones had replaced the head coach in the middle of a season. Phillips, who signed a two-year extension with the team prior to the start of the year, was 35-23 with the Cowboys since taking over after the 2006 season.http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/news/story?id=5780262
Dallas Cowboys History
Established on January 28, 1960, the franchise was founded by owners Bedford Wynne and Clint Murchison, Jr. The first Head Coach for the team was Tom Landry. In the inaugural season, the team did not win a single game, but the Cowboys would eventually win their first game in 1961. They reached their first NFL Championship game in 1966 and returned in 1967, losing both times to the Green Bay Packers. In 1971, they lost their first Super Bowl, but the following season they defeated the Baltimore Colts for their first Super Bowl championship.http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/dal/
In 1984, H.R. Bright purchased the Cowboys from Clint Murchsion, under his reign the Cowboys failed to reach the Super Bowl and he quickly became disenchanted with the team.http://www.dallascowboys.com/team/history_year.cfm?yr=1984 On February 25, 1989, Jerry Jones, the owner of a gas and oil exploration business, purchased the team.http://www.dallascowboys.com/team/history_year.cfm?yr=1989
His first act as Owner was to fire the only head coach the team ever had in Tom Landry, and replaced him with then University of Miami head coach Jimmy Johnson.http://www.dallascowboys.com/team/history_year.cfm?yr=1989 After suffering a season in which the Cowboys won only one game in 1989, the franchise used a series of trades and draft picks to rebuild the organization back into one of the elite teams in the league. They would go on and win Super Bowl Championships in 1992, 1993 and, even after the resignation of Jimmy Johnson one year later, in 1995.http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/dal/
