JR Nation gives Junior their support again...

Chex Most Popular Driver Award

Junior Nation has spoken once again. For the seventh consecutive year, fans of Dale Earnhardt Jr. have voted their driver the NASCAR NMPA Chex Most Popular Driver. In winning the 2009 award, he joins Bill Elliott and Richard Petty as the only drivers to win the award at least seven times. They made sure to let everyone know they still stand by their man.

The result was determined by online voting during the course of the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup season

Junior flew out to Las Vegas to receive the NASCAR NMPA Chex Most Popular Driver Award at the National Motorsports Press Association's Myers Brothers Media Luncheon in Las Vegas on Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 and thank his loyal fans.

“I’m extremely honored to win this award again, and I want to thank the fans,” Dale Jr. said. “They’ve stuck with us, and I’m always humbled by that. We didn’t have the year we were expecting on the Cup side. I take a lot of honor in this award and a lot of pride. I know it's kind of a cliché, but I just wanted to be a race-car driver, wanted to be able to make a living showing up, driving cars every week and having the fan support like I have has been an incredible bonus for me. I can't thank them enough, so I guess I'll just keep showing up."

The fans though, weren't the only ones Junior thanked, he made mention of his late father for what he called giving him a "hell of a gift in popularity."

Contents

DOGS

Killer
A 70 pound Boxer that loves to ride in the car with Junior. Killer always demands the front seat and wants to go everywhere Junior goes. This dog is the son of Foster, Greg Biffle’s dog. Killer likes to chase cats when he’s not sleeping.

Stroker Ace
A Great Dane with Champion bloodlines. He’s named after fictional race car driver “Stroker Ace,” who was played by Burt Reynolds in the 1983 movie by the same name. Junior once ran a Busch race at Daytona with Stroker Ace on the car where his name usually goes.

CATS

Buddy
Junior got Buddy in a New Hampshire pet store back in 2000. It seems Junior stopped at the mall following the race and left with Buddy in tow. Buddy spent 3 years on the road crew traveling with Junior and the race team. These days Buddy stays home in North Carolina.

Tux
A black and white Maine Coon cat that Junior and his sister Kelley discovered in a Mooresville, North Carolina pet shop during a shopping trip to buy tropical fish. Although Tux is a big cat weighing 15 pounds, this big cat is very playful.

BUFFALO

Laverne and Shirley
Junior received the pair of buffalo as a gift and named them after the girls on the 70’s TV show Laverne and Shirley. They are somewhat highly strung and territorial, and demand to be fed before the Texas Longhorns they share the property with.

TEXAS LONGHORNS

Lindy Lou
Dance ’til Dawn
Shadows Tiger Lily
Junior acquired 3 Texas Longhorns. The 3 massive cows, which can tip the scales at 2,000 pounds each, roam the property at Junior’s house alongside the buffalo. The horns on a Longhorn can grow 6 to 9 feet.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. "Quotes" past and present

(on winning the 2008 Chex Most Popular NASCAR Driver Award): "I've been fortunate enough to win this award now six times, and I can tell you it never gets old." said Dale Earnhardt Jr. "I've said it many times before that this award is special because it's the voice of the fans."

(on living up to greatness) "I didn't look like my dad, and my mannerisms weren't like his, so I didn't get many comparisons to him. So the pressure of being Dale Earnhardt Jr. wasn't so great. Just trying to make it was hard enough, you know? I liked the fact that I was able to drive for my dad, but I always knew that it might not work out. It's real hard to work for family. Fortunately, it has worked out. I can't believe they pay me to do this."

(on patience) "I'm going to be a champion. I have that confidence to make it happen. When you feel like you're the man to beat, you're already up on the game. But I've always done it at my own pace."

(on holding the team together) "We have about 270 employees in our shop, and only a third go to the racetrack. So they're building these cars and making all this stuff happen, and they never celebrate in victory lane with us. So what I try to do--it's simple, really--is just be visible, just be around the office when I have some time off. It's real important that you have that relationship with all your employees. I'm related to this; it's kin to me."

(on carving a legacy) "I don't compete against my dad's fame. I want to do everything I can to honor him. Part of me always wants to stay under Dad's wing and be overshadowed by him in a way...But there's a part of me that wants to break out and be my own man and get my own respect."

(on continuing the legacy) "If I have a son, hell yeah, I want him to race. I'll be like those damn beauty-queen moms. You know how they have those little 6-year-olds that they're rushing to beauty contests? That's the kind of dad I'll be with racing. He'll be 6 years old, and I'll be yelling, "Damn it, you didn't go 'round that corner right! I told you, man, late apexes!"

(on a healthy lifestyle "I used to not even pay attention to my health. I'd eat what I wanted to eat, I went wherever I wanted to, raised hell, didn't sleep. But it takes away from how quick-witted you are and how sharp you are in the race car. And I quit smoking over New Year's. I was real proud of that."

(on dating): "If I was real, real good at dating, I'd probably been married by now,"

(on what would have been): ""If I wasn't racing, I'd be working at my dad's Chevrolet dealership. It was only a couple of years ago that I was the fastest oil-change man in the place."

Ever wonder about the flag painted on Dale Jr.'s car next to his name above the door?

It represents Dale Jr.'s home state; it's the North Carolina flag.

List of Nascar drivers and home state flags

North Carolina

When Dale Jr. is racing in his Impala SS, the combined total weight is 3,630 lbs. The car weighs 3,450 lbs and the remainder of the weight belongs to Junior.

There are only 4 NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers that are left-handed...

Dale Earnahrdt Jr.

Terry Labonte

Joey Logano

Tony Stewart

When driving counter clockwise at race tracks, Junior, Terry, Joey and Tony do not have the same advantages has those who are right-handed. For right-handed drivers, it is easy for them to focus when driving counter clockwise, but, Junior, Terry, Joey and Tony have the advantage over the right-handed drivers when racing clockwise on road courses (Sonoma, CA and Watkins Glens, NY).

February 2004 -

Following his Daytona 500 win, Junior makes an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Letterman did a funny sports bit and had Junior do something that was probably tougher than winning the race. He asked Junior to parallel park a crappy Chevy Malibu rental outside the Ed Sullivan Theater on 53rd Street.

Letterman to Junior: "Do you currently have a valid driver’s license?"

The Daytona 500 champion performed the challenge without a hitch, a perfect 10!

Parallel parking in New York City is no challenge for Junior.

Junior admits he's shy and nervous at times and unfortunately turns down appearances and other things. He envies Jeff Gordon for being able to host such shows as Live with Regis and Kelly and Saturday Night Live.

Before entering the racing world, Junior was an oil changer at his dad's Chevrolet Dealership. When he wasn't changing oil, he was busy cleaning out stables at his father's farm.

No. 88

Dale Earnhardt Jr. adds to long line of history behind the No. 88 in NASCAR

The No. 88 debuts on September 11, 1949 at Langhorne Pennsylvania Speedway, the first season of what was to become the Sprint Cup. Driver Pepper Cunningham started 15th and drove his No. 88 car, a 1949 Lincoln, to a 33rd place finish after a crash in the strictly Stock event. Although a dismal start, the No. 88 would and eventually ends up in victory lane 66 times to date and counting.

The No. 88 has been associated with General Motors, Chevrolet, Ford, and Chrysler.

The list of drivers who have raced in a No. 88 car in NASCAR Sprint Cup reads like an all-star race roster. To add to the list below, Jim Paschal, Fireball Roberts and Joe Weatherly have also taken turns driving a No. 88.
