The term daisy is a generic term applied to any and all of the estimated 23,000 species in the Asteraceae family, the largest family of flowering plants in the world.
A simple-looking flower characterized by a round, often yellow center surrounded by delicate ray-like petals, daisies come in a variety of colors, from the classic white English daisy to the brightly colored gerberas, dahlias, and asters.
The center of the daisy is actually a dense assortment of hundreds of tiny tubular flowers. This makes the daisy an effective pollinator and has led to is speedy, and often intrusive propagation.
Available in perennial and annual varieties, the daisy is a favorite among gardeners for it hardiness and some species have become so plentiful as to be deemed weeds in North America.
