Daffy Duck is a cartoon character created for the Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies series from Warner Bros. He is described as someone manic, greedy and devious and was Bugs Bunny's rival. http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0027422/bio The character was created by animators, Tex Avery and Bob Clampett, with voice actor, Mel Blanc, putting life into it. Upon Mel Blanc's demise, several voice actors lent their voices to Daffy Duck, including Jeff Bergman, Dee Baker and Joe Alaskey. http://looneytunes.warnerbros.co.uk/web/stars/stars_daffy.jsp
Daffy Duck is noted as particularly extreme and was the first of Warner Bros' nutty characters that appealed to an adult audience and rivaled Disney's Silly Symphonies characters. http://toolooney.goldenagecartoons.com/daffy.htm In 2002, Daffy Duck was the 14th Favorite Cartoon Character on TV Guide's list. http://archives.cnn.com/2002/SHOWBIZ/TV/07/30/cartoon.characters/index.html
Background
Daffy Duck was introduced in the black and white animated short, Porky's Duck Hunt, which starred Porky Pig. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029426/ His character was unnamed, drawn as an ordinary looking duck with a distinct white ring on his neck. Daffy Duck's debut placed him as this wild, hyperactive, fearless and relentless persona who was the complete opposite of a harmless and mild-mannered Porky Pig. His development set the tone for more smart-alecky characters created by Warner Bros.http://archive.sensesofcinema.com/contents/cteq/05/37/porkys_duck_hunt.html Daffy Duck and Porky Pig appeared in many other cartoons as rivals.
When Bugs Bunny was developed in the 1940s, Daffy Duck also had to undergo changes starting with his physical appearance and then later, his personality. From this water-hopping, neurotic duck, Daffy became a conniving, jealous and greedy creature, who traded wits and compete with his rabbit archenemy. Credit is given to Chuck Jones who was the animator behind Daffy Duck's evolution.http://toolooney.goldenagecartoons.com/daffy.htm With this new rivalry in place, to span for two decades, Porky Pig then became Daffy's sidekick.
Chuck Jones' departure from Warner Bros and the subsequent changes in the industry brought forth more changes to the character. Daffy Duck soon appeared with new characters like Road Runner, Sylvester and Speedy Gonzales in low-budget cartoon productions. As TV shows rose in demand, many of the Looney Tunes classics were repackaged as programs and TV specials. In the late 70s, NBC ran the Daffy Duck Show on Saturday mornings. The network also aired Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century, a special created by Chuck Jones as commissioned by George Lucas to supplement his movie, The Empire Strikes Back.http://looney.goldenagecartoons.com/tv/tvspecials/
The character of Daffy Duck also appeared in other cartoon series which were developed in the 90s like Tiny Toons Adventures and Baby Looney Tunes. Daffy Duck also appeared in movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Space Jam.
