Temperament
The dachshund is typically a clever, energetic and loving dog that gets along with children and adapts well to any living environment.American Kennel Club (AKC):[1] According to the Dachshund Club of America, "the Dachshund craves being the center of all family activities, and he is not a dog well suited to being an outside pet." http://www.akc.org/pdfs/breeds/ClubFlierPDFs/Dachshund.pdf
Health Problems
The dachshund is susceptible to Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a condition that causes discs within the vertebrae of the spine to rupture and place force directly on the spinal cord. This condition causes the dog great pain and even paralysis in more severe cases.American College of Veterinary Surgeons: [1]
Adopting - or Rescuing - a Dachshund
There are rescue groups around the U.S. and the world which specialize in dachshunds (as there are for most breeds). Some are sanctuaries that take in unwanted dachshunds, nurse them back to good health, and then adopt them out. Some are more like facilitators that help match up rescuers with someone who has a dachshund that can no longer be properly taken care of.
Here is a list of just a few of the organizations in 14 states and Canada: http://adopt-a-dachshund.adoptapet.com//search_multi_form?tmpl=search_dogs_44#shelter_links
