  • Career

D.W. Griffith entered film making as an extra, but worked his way rapidly to directing for the Biograph company. Between 1908 and 1913, Griffith directed over four hundred short films. During this time, he also experimented with techniques that would become standards of modern film making: cross-cutting, close-ups, and a moving camera. Griffith's successes led him to make feature-length films, culminating in his biggest success, Birth of a Nation.

With Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin, Griffith founded film studio United Artists.
