Career
Lawrence spent the majority of his career traveling the world. His first experience came after eloping with his lifelong companion and wife of his former modern languages professor, Frieda Weekley. The two traveled to Germany and then along the alps into Italy. During WWI he and his wife moved to England where they were viewed with suspicion for her German heritage and lived in near destitution. During this time he wrote The Rainbow and its sequel Women in Love. Following the war, the Lawrences set off on what D.H. termed his 'savage pilgrimage', voluntarily exiling themselves from Britain and traveling the world. During this time he wrote profusely and established himself as one of the finest travel writers of his time. In March 1925 he suffered a near fatal attack of malaria and tuberculosis while visiting Mexico and was forced to settle down in Italy with his wife. During this time he wrote Lady Chatterley's Lover while slowly deteriorating from complications arising from tuberculosis. He eventually succumbed to the disease in 1930. -
