The Cyprus Dispute is a conflict between the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots over the island country of Republic of Cyprus . Cyprus was divided in 1974 in response to a coup by the Cypriot National Guard on the President of Cyprus Makarios III. In 1983, The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus declared itself independent from the Republic of Cyprus. The country was condemned by the United Nations, and is not recognized by any countries other than Turkey. In 2002 Kofi Annan proposed a resolution were both Cypriot states would be merged with a shared federal constitution, a collective presidential council, and individual constitutions as well as federal constitution. The Annan Plan was revised five times, and the Greek Cypriots voted 'no' because they felt it was excessively pro-Turkish.
