CTV is the largest private owned Canadian television network, and is in the English language. CTV's official slogan is "Canada's #1 Network", which it has been since 2005. CTV, Inc. also owns several radio stations across the country.
The typical programming on CTV contains hit shows such as, ER, Ghost Whisperer, CSI, Flashpoint and Canadian Idol. They often have Canadian-made movies and miniseries' on a regular basis. They also have news shows including CTV National News, Canada AM, CTV News, and W-Five and Question Period. CTV also broadcasts certain cable television shows, including The Sopranos, Punk'd, The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, and Nip/Tuck. This has caused controversy in the past from parents and family advocates who claim that the language and content is inappropriate for prime time viewing.

Five of the original television shows were Canadian-made, and the rest were either in the United Kingdom or the United States. Originally, the network was named Canadian Television Network, but the CBC declared that they had the rights to the term "Canadian" in their name. The network renamed themselves to CTV Television Network. On September 1, 1967, CTV began broadcasting in color.
