The Crufts dog show is a conformation show organized annually by the kennel club. For a dog to qualify for the competition, it must be in the list of eligible breeds listed on the Crufts official website. In the Crufts show, the dogs compete by breed, group and finally for the ‘’best in show’’ award. The dogs are first separated by gender and then by age. The male and female winners from both sides are brought to compete against each other. The dog that wins in a breed finally gets to compete with other breed of dogs of the same group, to get ‘’the best in group’’. The winners in their various groups, finally competes for the ‘’best in show award’’, which is the biggest award in the competition.
The 2010 show is expecting somewhere around 160,000 guests, which is close to 2009's seat chart. This show has dog contestants from all across the world. It has been said in the world famous book Guiness World Records, the largest Dog Show in the world, goes to the Crufts Dog Show, hands down. The first time the show has ever left London, UK was in 1991, when the Crufts Show was moved to the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham UK. Since that day, it has been held at the NEC every year.
History
Charles Cruft, worked as a general manager for a dog biscuit manufacturer, where he would travel to different dog shows all across the world. This let him build contacts and know exactly what the standards were for the dogs, at the shows. Cruft had his first dog show in 1886. The name of this show used to be Crufts"—"Cruft's Greatest Dog Show", and was held at the Royal Aqricultural Hall, in Islington, in 1891. Consisting of around two thousand dogs, this was the first show in which any breed could compete. It went on to become the biggest dog show in the world.
