Croutons are cubes of baked, fried or deep-fried bread that are often used to compliment salads and soups.
While croutons can be an ingredient in a range of dishes, they can also be eaten alone as an enjoyable snake.
Croutons are simple to make, and remain fresh for long periods of time. The persisting freshness stems from the fact that croutons are often made from already stale bread.
The French word for "crust", croûte, is where the crouton gets its name.
