Croque-monsieur is a hot ham and cheese sandwich, that has been grilled or broiled. The Fancier versions of the Croque-monsieur calls for Mornay or Bechamel sauce. Adding a fried egg to the top of the sandwich makes it go from masculine (monsieur) to feminine (Madame) and is then called the Croque-madame.
