Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is a role-playing video game for the PSP, which is the prequel to Final Fantasy VII. The game is set seven years before the start of Final Fantasy VII about Zack, a second-class SOLDIER in the Shinra Corporation.

Set seven years before Final Fantasy VII, we follow Zack, Aeris deceased boyfriend from FF VII, and learn how he met Cloud and the origins of Sephiroth. The beginning of the Shinra empire's rule and the rise of Midgar is also detailed.

Unlike FF VII, the game is not turn-based, and instead relies on real time battles. Another addition to the game is the Digital Mind Wave which determines whether you level up your character or perform a Limit Break. Other elements such as materia are carried over from the original game. The US version of the game has an 'hard-mode' where the enemies gain 3 to 4 times more HP and doubled stats.
