Crime and Punishment is a 19th Century novel by Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky. Originally it was published as monthly installments in the literary journal The Russian Messenger.
Plot Synopsis
One of the author's first great works, the novel traces the emotional breakdown of impoverished student Raskolnikov, who is accused of murder but eventually begins to face the consequences of his actions.
Critical Reception
- "This fresh, new translation... provides a more exact, idiomatic, and contemporary rendition of the novel that brings Fyodor Dostoevsky's tale achingly alive... It succeeds beautifully." - San Francisco Chronicle
- "This is a intoxicating book that wraps you into the plot and carries you into the mind of a confused man who is stricken with poverty. Because of his destitute situation, Raskolikov believes that he is morally above other men and therefore has the right to kill without punishment." - Barnes & Noble user review
