On an average day, there are many tens, and often over a hundred job postings on Craigslist Jobs in a typical large market.http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/jjj/ Craigslist has a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page for posting help wanted ads.http://www.craigslist.org/about/help/faq-job Craigslist charges a fee for posting "help wanted" or jobs ads in major US markets. The fee is $75 in the San Francisco Bay Area, and $25 in other major cities. This compares with fees 10 to 15 times higher charged by competing jobs boards such as Monster.com, CareerBuilder, and HotJobs. Craigslist shows 2007 data from Alexa comparing its traffic to competitors Monster and CareerBuilder demonstrating complete dominance in Craigslist traffic (though this is not broken down to the jobs category). Perhaps more to the point (though less up to date) is 2006 Yahoo! comparative data of the number of responses to jobs ads, showing Craigslist at 51 per ad vs. CareerBuilder at 69, Monster at 7, and HotJobs at 2, despite Craigslist prices being lower by a factor of 10 or more relative to those competitors.http://www.craigslist.org/about/job_boards_compared

Due to the ease of posting fraudulent posts, Craigslist disclaims any responsibility for the content of ads posted on its boards.http://www.craigslist.org/about/terms.of.use Users are advised to carry out their own due diligence and to make prudent choices in what they post, what they communicate to ad posters, and what meeting locations and arrangements they make.http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/about/safety Craigslist also provides advice on how to avoid being scammed on its site.http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/about/scams

History

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark started out in 1995 by sending email notifications to a list of his friends and co-workers about events in the Bay Area of San Francisco. Four years later, in 1999 he decided to devote his full time to developing the bulletin board site that grew out of those early emails -- Craigslist. Today Craigslist is one of the top 10 English-language websites in the world in terms of traffic, with annual sales estimated at nearly $1 million as of 2008.http://biz.yahoo.com/ic/129/129617.html

In August 2004, a former Craigslist shareholder sold his stake of about 25% in the company to eBay. Several years later, a legal battle has developed between the two companies, with eBay claiming Craigslist has illegally tried to dilute its minority stake.http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/05/01/paidcontent/main4061009.shtml Former eBay CEO, and current contender for California governorship, Meg Whitman, is slated to testify for eBay.http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601204&sid=aGpNUQ2Ktg3k In a counter-suit, Craigslist alleged eBay stole confidential business information to launch a competing website, Kijiji.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/07/ebay-craigslist-battle-fo_n_382344.html

Community and Culture

Though a for-profit company for quite some time, Craigslist maintains, as far as possible, a culture of non-commercialism, declining to post third party ads, using minimalist page formats with no graphics, etc. This attitude is symbolized by its retention of the ".org" suffix in its web address. Craigslist revenue is charged of companies who post for hire ads in major markets and brokered apartments in NYC. This follows from the Craigslist policy of helping people get jobs, housing, dates, etc. without having to pay for the service.http://www.craigslist.org/about/factsheet

Craigslist US visitors number nearly 50 million people, downloading an estimated 20 billion pages monthly. Over 100 user forums on the site cover topics from adoption to yoga.http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/forums/ One of these forums is dedicated to jobs ads.http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/forums/?forumID=7
