Craigslist
When Newmark moved to San Francisco, he began emailing lists of local events to his friends, who were mostly internet and software developers, in 1995. The subscriber list grew, and inspired Newmark to establish the Craigslist.com website in 1999. By 2000, Newmark was profiting enough from Craigslist, that he was able to quit his job with Charles Schwab, and work on Craigslist full time. The company, and its nine employees, worked out of Newmark's apartment. The website was organized into categories, allowing users easier access to the services and goods they are looking for.http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/04/21/corner_office_buckmaster_company/
Within four years, Craiglist had gone national, serving nine different cities in the United States. The company continued to expand, going international, being available in over 450 cities in 50 different countries, and receiving over 9 billion page views each month at the present day.http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/04/21/corner_office_buckmaster_company/
The philosophy behind Craigslist is community and simplicity. Members have a level of control over the site's contents with the ability to post prohibited or inappropriate postings, and an extensive forum by which a number of unofficial community regulations are established.
The only revenue the site brings in is from its paid job ads and broker real estate listings, as all other postings are free. Craigslist is one of the top job boards available and the ninth most viewed website in the U.S., with over 500,000 new job postings and 10 million classified ads posted monthly.
