National Hockey League player Craig Conroy began his professional career after being drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1990. Montreal traded him to the St. Louis Blues in 1996, where he played for four seasons before joining the Calgary Flames. After being team captain for two seasons, he voluntarily ceded his captaincy to Jarome Iginla at the beginning of the 2003-2004 season, the same year the Flames made it to the final game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning. A free agent, Conroy was signed by the Kings in 2005 and played in Los Angeles for two seasons before he was traded back to Calgary in early 2007.
Quote
"In my own mind, I thought it was time for Jarome to take over the team. Even though it was his team already, officially naming him the captain made sense. So, I went and asked him and said, "I think it's time you were the captain," and he accepted. He never said anything or made any comments. He told me he thought I was a good captain. I appreciated that, but I told him he was the face of the organization, he was going to be here for a while and he deserved to be the official leader."
