Our Expert: Peter Darling

Peter is an accomplished pianist, music director, performer, composer and instructor. Having begun his musical studies at the age of three, his musical pursuits have led him to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Olympics in Sydney, as well as various venues in Washington, DC, and Los Angeles. He graduated from George Mason University with a bachelor's degree in music education and has been teaching private piano lessons for over 10 years.

If you've ever wanted to learn how to play the piano but didn't know where to start and don't want to spend a lot of money on private lessons, this is the app for you! Mahalo's beginner piano course will get you acquainted with the basics to get you on your way to becoming a skilled pianist.

Follow along with our piano expert Peter Darling—a piano instructor who's been teaching students of all ages since 2000—as he shows you all the piano essentials. You will learn the correct way to place your hands on the keys, learn various chord and scale patterns that are the building blocks of all music, play some songs and work on exercises that will build your dexterity and muscle memory.

Start to finish, the course runs about an hour long, but you should expect to spend three hours running through it at a slow, steady pace, adding in time for your own additional practice and review of difficult concepts. Additionally, you'll want to practice at least 20 minutes a day until these skills and theories become second nature.
