Transposing MIDI Notes

To transpose means you are moving notes or a melody up or down the musical scale. When you transpose, they are the same notes but have a higher or lower pitch within the key range.

This can be helpful if you have two similar musical elements but don't want them to conflict with each other. You can transpose one to a higher key and one to a lower key. This can be done in GarageBandwith a MIDI audio region you recorded.

Open the Track Editor Window

To transpose MIDI notes, first select the track you want to work on and click the Solo button so you hear only this track. Then open up the track editor window by clicking on the Track Editor button.

Select Notes to Transpose

In the Notes view, click and drag over the notes that you want to transpose. They will become highlighted green.

Move the Notes

Use a single note as a reference point for transposing the melody. Identify the note's key and locate the next octave up or down. Click and drag this note to the higher or lower octave. The rest of the melody will transpose with it.
