"The First Noel" is a traditional carol with no definite origin. The French term "noel" means Christmas, referring to the birth of Jesus Christ. The song is considered one of the oldest holiday classics, with records of its history but none of its original creator, possibly dating back as early as the 13th Century.

The song is in 3/4 time, which means that you'll be counting three beats per measure instead of four. Performed by Jen in the key of A, this song can also be played in the keys of C, D and G, if you want experiment with different variations.

The song is lightly strummed using downstrokes in this exercise. There are only three simple open chords used: A, E and D, which allows you the opportunity to get creative with how you play. One option would be to finger pick rather than strum, giving the song a gentler sound.

D                    A          D       E       A
Shining in the East beyond them far
        A        E          D                A
And to the Earth it gave great light
        D           A                  D    E     A
And so it continued both day and night.

D                         A                D      E   A
Three Wise men came from country far
     A               E      D                A
To seek for a King was their intent

O'er Bethlehem it took its rest
       A                 E      D                A
And there it did both Pause and stay
D                     A                  D E    A
Right o'er the place where Jesus lay.
     A       E       D       A

Born is the King of Israel!

         A               E        D               A
Then entered in those Wise men three
      D               A       D E  A
Full reverently upon their knee
        A          E           D         A
And offered there in His presence
         D             A               D    E  A
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
     A       E       D       A
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
D                A          D E A
Born is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accord
        D                A   D          A
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
        A                 E                  D           A
That hath made Heaven and Earth of nought
        D          A                D     E    A
And with his blood mankind has bought.
