A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook a region about 20 miles north-northwest of San Jose, Costa Rica, on the afternoon of Thursday, January 8, 2009. At least 14 people were killed and nearly two dozen were reported missing. Officials estimated as many as 300 people were injured. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake lasted about 40 seconds.
