Cosmopolitan Magazine is a monthly magazine for women. Often abbreviated as Cosmo, the magazine contains a wide variation of content including articles on health, careers, relationships, celebrities and fashion news, as well as fashion photography.
Cosmopolitan Magazine was first started as a family magazine in 1886. It's focus shifted to a women magazine in 1965 after the current editor in chief, Helen Gurley Brown decided to completely transform the magazine. Helen took this decision because she wanted to create a magazine that could motivate women to be more assertive, stronger, and able to easily speak their minds in front of other people, especially men.http://www.cosmopolitan.com/about/about-us_how-cosmo-changed-the-world
The magazine received various criticisms since their transformation. One of them criticize a near-nude centerfold of actor Burt Reynolds in April 1972. At the time when it's published, a semi-nude centerfold was still considered taboo and offensive.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmopolitan_%28magazine%29#Criticism
Another famous criticism happened on January 1988 when the magazine featured an article that claimed HIV is not contagious for a woman if the sexual activity is performed by heterosexuals; even if they don't use any kind of protection. It was also claimed that it's impossible to transmit HIV to a woman if the sexual intercourse is performed on a missionary position. It caused a widespread controversy and has especially angered gay rights activists.http://newyorkmetro.com/news/features/17158/index2.htmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmopolitan_%28magazine%29#Criticism
