Food Uses and Controversy
Most manufactured corn oil is sold bottled for cooking use, though a significant portion is contained in margarine and used for frying in snack products such as potato chips.
Debate persists concerning the health benefits or risks of corn oil. The United States Department of Agriculture maintains that corn oil may help control blood cholesterol levels and are relatively cheap to use. The Mayo Clinic and WebMD articles also suggest that corn and other vegetable oils can help reduce cholesterol. Several organizations, however, including RealAge and Macrobiotic Guide, believe that corn oil has significantly high levels of polyunsaturated fats, and thus could counteract the positive effects on one's heart.
