U.S. National Guardsman Corey Glass deserted his post and filed for refugee status in Canada in 2006.
Glass has stated that, after serving in Iraq, he came to the conclusion that the Iraq War is "illegal and immoral" and that he "could not in good conscience continue to take part in it."
On May 21, 2008, the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board denied Glass' application for refugee status and issued a deportation date of June 12, 2008.
Glass is still on active duty with the National Guard and officially listed as "absent without leave." Upon his return, he will, initially, undergo rehabilitation with the goal of reinstatement, but could face trial.
The Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board has reported that, since the Iraq War began in 2003, it has received about 40 applications from deserters seeking refugee status. Of those 40, five have made it to a high appeals court. All have been rejected.
