Coretta Scott King, the widow of Martin Luther King Jr., was known as The First Lady of Civil Rights. She founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center on June 26, 1968 in Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. King's leadership helped to institute the Black Leadership Forum, the National Black Coalition for Voter Participation and the Black Leadership Roundtable. Coretta Scott King was a supporter of lesbian and gay right causes and AIDS/HIV education and prevention. In 1997 she called for a new trial for James Earl Ray, claiming that his conviction was a government conspiracy. She was a against capital punishment and the 2003 Iraq invasion.
