Political Background
On February 25, 1986, Aquino was sworn into office. While in office, the new Philippine Constitution was enacted. One month into her presidency, Aquino issued the Proclamation No. 3. In 1987, she issued the Presidential Proclamation 131 and Executive Order 229, which dealt with land reform. The year before her run in office ended, she signed into law the Local Government Code. In 1992, Aquino opted out of the presidential race and chose to back her Defense Secretary Fidel V. Ramos.
Significance
Aquino is noted for opposing the autocratic rule of Ferdinand Marcos and for fighting to introduce democracy to her country. Recently, she has been a vocal opponent of the presidency of Gloria Arroyo, repeatedly calling for her resignation. She is also a staunch supporter of peace, women's empowerment and religious piety.
