Oscar-nominated Coraline is a stop-motion animated movie based on the book of the same name by Neil Gaiman. The title character moves with her parents to an apartment complex filled with odd characters. Coraline dreams of having a garden but her parents are too busy writing and working to pay attention to the adventurous girl. After finding a strange doll that resembles her, Coraline discovers a gateway to an elaborate fantasy world full of wonders and delights. However, she soon finds that the fantasy may be too good to be true.
Coraline was released in 2009 and nominated for an Academy Award for best animated film. The Oscar will be given out on March 7, 2010. Neil Gaiman blogged on March 6, 2010, that he was able to go to Los Angeles and enjoy hanging out with director Henry Selick because "we aren't going to win and that relieves some of the pressure."
About the director...
Director Henry Selick produced and wrote the screenplay for Coraline, adding the character of Wybie, who does not appear in the book.
Selick has previously directed the stop-motion animated films The Nightmare Before Christmas, as well as the live-action/animation hybrids James and the Giant Peach and Monkeybone. 2010 was the first year that he or one of his films received an Oscar nomination.
Too Scary for Children?
Some critics have complained that the PG-rated Coraline may be too intense for children, the target audience for most animated fantasy films.http://homepages.sover.net/~ozus/coraline.htm Among the movie's more frightening elements are the presence of ghosts and witches. As well, Coraline is repeatedly threatened with having her eyes removed and replaced with buttons. The fact that the film was initially screened in 3D in some theaters contributed to some of the concerns about its more over-the-top scary images.http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Is-Coraline-Too-Scary-For-Kids-11746.html
