The first full theatrical trailer for the upcoming stop-motion animated film Coraline went online in November of 2008. The film, based on a book by Neil Gaiman, was directed by Henry Selick, whose previous forays into stop-motion include The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach and the live-action/animation blend Monkeybone. Coraline hits theaters in February of 2009.
Trailer Synopsis
The trailer opens with young, blue-haired Coraline Jones exploring her new home at the Pink Palace Apartments complex. She does some chores, discovers some unfortunate flaws in the plumbing and is generally ignored by her put-upon parents. In the bathroom, she discovers a nest of creepy crawlies as a narrator informs us she has always dreamed of "finding a better world, a world more exciting than this." Her dreams appear to come true when she discovers a mysterious door built into one of the apartment walls. The door leads down a tunnel and into a parallel universe, resembling Coraline's own world but full of magic and whimsy. Unfortunately, after confronting her creepy "Other Mother," Coraline slowly discovers that this world is not entirely what it seems, and may even be some kind of sinister trap. The trailer concludes with scenes of Coraline confronting the horror hiding behind the surface of this alternate universe, and attempting to escape, as the narrator darkly intones that some doors were never meant to be opened.
