Teaching Baltimore
Coppin State was founded in 1900 as a one-year program designed to train teachers for Baltimore's then-segregated black elementary schools. Until 1963Coppin State University: History of Coppin Coppin only granted teaching degrees. In 1998, the school's long-running Education department participated in a unique experiment, taking over a poorly performing Baltimore elementary school, managing its staff and redeveloping its curriculum. The school, Rosemont Elementary, subsequently showed significant improvements in student performance.Rosemont Elementary: Our History
