Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also known as COPD, serves as an umbrella term for chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other lung disorders. This lung disease is most commonly caused by smoking an excessive amount of cigarettes. However, second-hand smoke, air pollution, and exposure to hazardous occupational pollutants can also increase a person's risk of developing COPD.
COPD does not develop overnight, building gradually over time. Due to this, the disease is usually neglected until it is in its advanced stages. Most cases of COPD are preventable, and one should take the necessary precautions throughout their life.
