A cookie press is a kitchen tool that uses a plunger to push cookie dough out of a small opening to create cookies of various shapes. Making cookies with a cookie press is a fast way to get the cookie baking done. The cookie press provides a fast means of making cookies with the same size and shape all with a push of a button per cookie.
There is usually a trigger or a plunger to make the cookie dough come out uniformly. Fill the barrel with the cookie dough and push the dough down to the bottom of the barrel. Give a couple of pumps so that the air is removed. The dough should be in the tube ready to be pumped or pressed out. Place the tip that makes the pattern you want to have onto the nose of the press and you are ready to begin to press out cookies.
Not all cookie dough can be used with a cookie press. The dough should have a soft texture and is usually made with softened butter and minimal mixing to allow for a dough with little trapped air.
You should not use a cookie press with any cookie dough that has been made with solid pieces such as oatmeal or chocolate chips.
If the cookie does not retain its shape on the cookie sheet the dough is too soft. In order to remedy this problem you should set the cookie press in the refrigerator for fifteen minutes. If the cookies are coming out too dry, then add a teaspoon or two of milk to the dough.

A step by step instructional video on the use of the cookie press. This video shows the process using store bought dough. This allowed her to make quick Christmas cookies. She used several different patterns so that we could see how simple the process can be. She put the dough in and pumped it twice to get the air out and then started pressing directly onto the cookie sheet in a downward motion. After changing the pattern she used the ribbon at a 90 degree angle. This allowed her to have the ribbon spread under the cookie press. Try this with your own cookie press and see just how fun making cookies can be.
