Cookie Diet

Don't be fooled—you won't be eating chocolate chip cookies on this diet. The Cookie Diet, created by Miami obesity physician Dr. Sanford Siegal in 1975, consists of cookies that are packed with fiber and protein, not sugar.c

What To Eat

According to WebMD, the only decisions to make on this diet are the cookie flavor you are in the mood for at any given meal time.

Siegal encourages Cookie Dieters to eat four to six cookies a day, which will supply you with 500 calories of fiber, amino acids and protein. They do not need to be refrigerated.

Along with the cookies, you will eat dinners made of four to six ounces of lean protein and steamed or raw vegetables, or light frozen dinners with a salad. Ranging from 300 to 1,000 calories per dinner, the Cookie Diet supplies practitioners with anywhere from 800 to 1,500 calories in a day.c

Practitioners are also encouraged to drink eight glasses of no-calorie coffee, tea, water or other beverages daily while barring alcohol, sweets, fruits and dairy.c

What To Expect

Eating only 800 calories a day will surely cause you to lose weight. Dr. Siegal claims his patients usually lose around 15 pounds each month, according to WebMD. 

Dr. Evan Bass of Kaiser Permanente has tried the diet himself, reporting that the first two weeks left him tired. Once he got used to the program, however, he found himself more energetic thereafter and has stuck to the program ever since.c

Cookie Diet and Health

The American Dietetic Association warns that an 800 calorie diet is lacking in the nutrition you should be getting from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy and fiber. Taking a multivitamin daily is recommended, as is speaking to a dietician or doctor before beginning the Cookie Diet.c
