Control is a film about the late Ian Curtis, lead singer of the band Joy Division. While forging a new kind of sound after the punk rock scene, Curtis was challenged by a rocky marriage and frequent seizures which ultimately led to his suicide on the eve of his first U.S. tour. The black and white biopic is based on the book, Touching From a Distance, by Curtis's wife, Deborah Curtis.
Origins of the Film
The director, Anton Corbijn, was a fan of the band in the late 1970s, shot several pictures of the them, and even directed their music video Atmosphere. Curtis' story was the directorial debut for the director who paid half the budget with his own money because he wanted to give Curtis an adequate farewell. Shooting on color stock and printed to black and white, the film took place on location in England and lasted for seven weeks.
