The Connecticut Sun play in the Eastern Conference in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The team was founded in 1998 as the Orlando Miracle and began its inaugural season in 1999 under the operation of the Orlando Magic, playing at the TD Waterhouse Centre in Orlando,FL.
In January 2003, the team relocated to Uncasville, CT and was renamed the Connecticut Sun. The Sun was the first WNBA franchise to be independently owned and to not share its market with an NBA team.
The Sun have reached the WNBA Finals twice in its seven years in Connecticut, falling short to the Seattle Storm in 2004 and the Sacramento Monarchs in 2005. The franchise has been home to many top players such as Margo Dydek, Katie Douglas, Asjha Jones, Nykesha Sales, Taj McWilliams-Franklin and Lindsay Whalen.
After failing to qualify for the WNBA playoffs for the first time in team history in 2009, the Sun traded All-Star point guard Lindsay Whalen to the Minnesota Lynx in exchange for former University of Connecticut star point guard Renee Montgomery and the number 1 overall pick in the 2010 WNBA draft. The team also signed former Sacramento Monarchs guard Kara Lawson to a three-year contract. With the first pick in the 2010 draft, the Sun selected University of Connecticut center Tina Charles. The team also acquired University of Nebraska forward Kelsey Griffin, Danielle McCray from the University of Kansas, and Allison Hightower from Louisiana State University.http://www.wnba.com/sun/news/sun_history.html<ref> <ref>http://www.wnba.com/draft2010/draft_board.html<ref>
