Conference USA East Division
History
Conference USA was formed in 1995 when two college athletic conferences, the Metro Conference and the Great Midwest Conference, decided to merge together. Originally, the league was founded with 6 football playing members: Cincinnati, Houston, Louisville, Memphis, Southern Miss, and Tulane. In the late 1990s, East Carolina, Army and UAB joined the league. TCU and South Florida followed in 2001 and 2003, respectively. In 2005, three schools, Cincinnati, Louisville, and South Florida left for the Big East Conference, while TCU joined the Mountain West Conference, and Army dropped out of the league to play as an independent. In order to combat this, the league acquired six new schools as conference members: Marshall, Rice, SMU, Tulsa and UTEP as full-fledged members, while also gaining UCF as a football-only member.
