The Mermaid Parade is an annual celebration held on the Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn, New York.
The History of the Parade
The parade was founded in 1983 by Coney Island USA, a non-profit arts organization that sought the revitalization of the world famous amusement park and beachfront. The parade was designed as a rebirth of the Coney Island Mardi Gras, a popular festival held in the area from 1903 to 1954. Each year, the parade crowns a King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, who lead the marchers in their revelry.Official Site: Coney Island Mermaid Parade
