The Commercial Mobile Alert System is a program to alert the public about emergencies via text messaging. The System allows mobile phone service providers to voluntarily participate; the customers of those who do will receive alerts whenever there is a national emergency. The three kinds of emergency the system will address are imminent national security threats, natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, and Amber Alerts. On April 10, 2008, the FCC adopted the proposed system, bringing it one step closer to being implemented. When the system is implemented, it will cover the entire U.S. Among the carriers that have announced they would participate in the program are Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T.
