History
After failed attempts to bring hockey back to Columbus, the NHL awarded the city a franchise in 1997, after Nationwide announced plans to fund a new arena. The team played their first game in 2000. A variety of top players have donned the Blue Jackets jersey, including Rick Nash, Sergei Fedorov, Pascal Leclaire, R.J. Umberger, Adam Foote and Ray Whitney. Nash is currently the team captain, and along with 2009 Calder Trophy winning goaltender Steve Mason, guided the club to their first playoff appearance in 2009.
