    Columbia University was founded in 1754 under the name King's College by royal charter of King George II of England. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the United States.

    The American Revolution halted classes in 1776 and the college would stay closed for eight years. In 1784, it reopened under the name Columbia.Columbia University: [1]
