Columbia is the largest city in South Carolina and is also the capital of the state. It was established in 1786 by the South Carolina General Assembly. Although settlements had begun in the mid-seventeenth century, when the Assembly established the town, it formally laid out the town in 400 blocks in a two-mile square on the river. Each block was divided into half-acre lots, sold by the city with the restriction that the buyer needed to build at
least 30 feet long and 18 feet wide within three years. Columbia was the second planned city in the United States.http://www.columbiasc.net/columbia/257
