Columbia is the largest city in South Carolina and also the capital of the state. It was founded in 1786 by the South Carolina General Assembly. Columbia is primarily in the Midlands region of South Carolina, and located in Richland County, but extends into Lexington County. Is is on the fall line of the Appalachian Mountains and connects to the Congaree River. Columbia is one of the best destinations for people who are interested in kayaks and canoes.

Recent History
The Congaree Vista district located along Gervais Street and was once a warehouse district. Since early 2000, it is now home to art galleries, restaurants, shops and the Colonial Center. The Colonial Center provides a place for people to enjoy concerts and shows. Some historic building in Columbia have been converted into apartment buildings and condos to provide housing for the growing number of people moving to the city.
