Super Bowl XLIV Preview

Prior to meeting in the Super Bowl, each team entered the playoffs as the top seed, earning a first-round bye and home-field advantage.

After starting the season with a perfect 13-0 record, the Saints dropped their final three games of the year. New Orleans dominated the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL Divisional Weekend before edging the Minnesota Vikings in an overtime thriller in the NFC Championship Game.

The Colts also started their season with 14-0 perfection, pulling their starters and losing their final two games. They easily won their divisional match-up as well, over the Baltimore Ravens before downing the New York Jets in the AFC Championship Game.

Background and History

The Colts and Saints have played 10 times throughout NFL history, with each team winning five games. The first three meetings came when the Colts were based in Baltimore, with the Colts winning games in 1967, 1969 and 1973. After their move to Indianapolis, in 1983, the Colts lost the next five meetings, including in 1986, 1989, 1995, 1998 and 2001. Under the leadership of NFL MVP quarterback Peyton Manning, the Colts rebounded to defeat the Saints in 2003 and 2007.

Family Affair

Two stories that are part of the subplot involve family ties: one involving a current player and his father, while the other involves the significant others for two players from reality television.

Peyton Manning is the starting quarterback for the Colts. He grew up in New Orleans along with his brothers Cooper and Eli. Their father, Archie, won the Heisman Trophy while at Ole Miss and played the majority of his NFL career with the Saints. Although Archie is still one of the most popular former Saints' players of all-time, he stated during Super Bowl Week that he'll be rooting for Peyton to win.

Although the game is being televised on CBS, it might as well be televised on E! Network. That's because Kendra WIlkinson, former Playboy model and girlfriend of Hugh Hefner, former star of The Girls Next Door, is now married to current Colts wide receiver Hank Baskett. Additionally, Kim Kardashian, one of the stars of Keeping Up with the Kardashians is dating current Saints running back Reggie Bush.
