For years, the city of Denver had made several attempts to bring a Major League baseball team to the city most notably the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1985 ,but it seemed almost as if the city would never get a major league franchise. 2009 Playoffs
The 2009 season marked the return of the Rockies to the playoffs as a wild card. The Rockies got off to a shakey start to begin the season with a 19-28 mark which led to the firing of manager Clint Hurdle who led the Rockies to the post season and the World Series just two years ealier. He would be replaced by former LA Dodgers manager and bench coach Jim Tracy. The Rockies would go from nine games under .500 to five games over .500 by the end of June.
The Rockies continued to ride their wave of success into September and the playoffs. But the Giants, Dodgers, and Braves wouldn't make it easy for the Rockies. All three teams would make a push at the end of the season, but the Rockies would manage to hold them off to get a playoff berth. Throughout most of the season, the Rockies were battling the Dodgers for the division, but the Dodgers would snap the Rockies five game winning streak to win the NL Western Division.
The Rockies would end up facing the NL Eastern Division winners the Philadelphia Phillies and would lose the series 3-1.
