The Colorado Party is the current ruling party of Paraguay. It was founded in 1887 and came to power in 1946. Having ruled Paraguay for 61 years, it is considered the longest running party in the world. Traditionally a conservative party, some policies have softened in recent years under the Nicanor Duarte presidency. Pre-election polls indicate that the Colorado Party may lose their majority position in the upcoming 2008 Election. The party's candidate for president, Blanca Ovelar, has placed third in recent polls, well behind the leader Fernando Lugo. Many analysts believe party infighting and dissatisfaction with the Duarte presidency are the causes of the party's weak showing in polls.
