Collie

The collie originated in Great Britain and was used for herding sheep. They are considered a robust and healthy breed. The span of types of the dog is quite wide, as there are about twenty different varieties, including the Rough Collie, the Border Collie and many more. Many varieties of Collie, don't actually have the word "Collie" included in their names, such as the Welsh Sheepdog.

Temperament

Collies are extremely intelligent, energetic and agile with great stamina and endurance. If kept as a pet and not a working dog special attention needs to be given in making sure the dog is stimulated and exercised. Collies make wonderful participants in sports such as sheepdog trials, flyball, Frisbee and dog agility. They are easy to train and good with children, but usually need to be taught not to herd people, as some will try to do. They should also be well socialized to avoid them becoming very wary of strangers.http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/collie.htm

Collies are extremely loyal.

Appearance

They are usually medium sized dogs and can weigh anywhere from 22 to 55 pounds when full grown. The color is, typically speaking, either black and white or tricolor, which is black, white and tan. They usually have pointed snouts and most have long tails, although some have bobbed-tails or no tail at all. The ones that have full tails have bodies only slightly longer than their tails. The teeth should meet in a scissors bite. The eyes are medium sized almond shapes and are usually brown, except in Blue Merles, where the eyes may be blue or one blue and one brown. Their fur can be any length and texture, depending on the type of dog. Cattle herding Collies tend to be a bit more stocky than the other types.http://www.dogster.com/breeds/Border_Collie

Origin of the Name

The origin of the name is not known for sure, although there are a couple of theories behind where it may derive from. One of those theories is that it may come from Scotland, where the word colley means black-faced mountain sheep. Another is that the word may come from the word coal, considering that black and white are usually main coloring traits amongst the breed.http://www.canismajor.com/dog/collie.html
