The College World Series is actually the culmination of a much larger playoff field of 64 team that begins with the “Regionals”. These Regionals are actually sections of four teams set to face off, with the highest seeded team serving as the host team. One team of the four will win and advance to one of eight “Super Regionals” which pits two Regionals winners against one another in a best-of-three series.
The winners of these Super Regionals then advance to Omaha to play in the College World Series and attempt to win the NCAA Baseball National Title.
The College World Series itself is a double elimination tournament all the way to the championship game which is its own best-of-three series.http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/college/postseason/bracket-challenge/2009/results/TournamentResults.html
The 2010 College World Series will begin on June 19, 2010 and will take place until either June 29th or 30th depending on how many games are needed to determine the 2010 National Collegiate Baseball Champion http://www.cwsomaha.com/
NCAA Agreement
On April 30, 2008, the College World Series of Omaha, Inc. and the NCAA reached an agreement that will keep the College World Series in Omaha for until at least 2030. This agreement was in large part due to Omaha’s plans to build a new stadium in time for the 2011 World Series.
The NCAA and corporation known as College World Series of Omaha, Inc. have reached a 20 year “memorandum of understanding” that will take effect once the current contract between Omaha and the NCAA expires after the 2010 World Series ends.
While the corporation was actually the negotiating agency along with the NCAA, the city of Omaha’s mayor at the time, Mike Fahey was actually the lead negotiator for the contract, recognizing what keeping the College World Series in Omaha meant for the Nebraska metropolis. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=3375275
