  • Cold sores are blisters which form on the lips or outer edge of the mouth caused by the herpes simplex virus. The herpes simplex virus usually is contracted through a sore or break in the skin in or around the mouth. In some cases people may carry the virus but never get cold sores or have any symptoms. There are two types of the herpes symplex virus, HSV-1 and HSV-2 and either type can cause cold sores or genital herpes.

Cold sores are often red, swollen and painful. The blisters will usually break open and leak a clear fluid then scab over after a few days. It can take a few days to two weeks for cold sores to heal properly. The herpes simplex virus cannot be cured and stays in your body for the rest of your life.
