Code 46 is a 2003 BBC Sci-fi Drama film directed by Michael Winterbottom. Frank Cottrell Boyce wrote the plot for the BBC. The movie stars Tim Robbins as William Geld and Samantha Morton as Maria Gonzales. Set in the near future, the world has been split into two classes of humans, the "insiders" and the "outsiders". "Insiders" are not allowed to reproduce with "outsiders" - doing so is a breach of Code 46.
Reviews
"It's a bleak future, but not a bleak film. Winterbottom has an uncanny ability to create beautiful, hypnotic sequences, using contemporary music. His films have a seductive modernism, but without losing focus on character and idea. Other directors raised on MTV use music to paper the cracks; Winterbottom uses it to get inside the cracks. He is one of the most intelligent and original British directors at work today. Code 46 is not completely engrossing as a romance, but is fascinating as a scary proposition of things to come." — Sydney Morning Herald http://www.smh.com.au/news/reviews/code-46/2005/08/03/1122748696471.html
"Unfortunately, the story isn't quite substantial enough to sustain the running time; it still manages to feel long at 92 minutes. Cinematography, production design and music are all top-notch, but the film largely succeeds because of the leads, two fine actors at the top of their game." — Genevieve Harrison - Empire Reviews http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/ReviewComplete.asp?FID=10298
