Gabrielle Coco Bonheur Chanel was born on August 19, 1883 in Saumur, France. Chanel was raised by relatives after her mother died when she was six years old. She made privileged connections during the years she was a mistress to wealthy men, which enabled her to become a millinery shop owner. She became known for her loosely fitting comfortable clothing, the versatile black dress, signature jacket and Chanel No. 5 perfume.
