"Though a classic rags to riches saga, this biopic of Loretta Lynn doesn't fall victim to cliches, and benefits immensely from the astonishingly authentic turn from Sissy Spacek, who does her own singing; even real-life singer Lynn liked the picture." — Emanuel Levy, EmanuelLevy.com http://www.emanuellevy.com/search/details.cfm?id=8730

"Superior biopic with an unforgettable performance by Sissy Spacek" — Jon Niccum, Lawrence Journal-World http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/coal_miners_daughter/articles/1318533/superior_biopic_with_an_unforgettable_performance_by_sissy_spacek

"The movie isn't great art, but it has been made with great taste and style; it's more intelligent and observant than movie biographies of singing stars used to be. That makes it a treasure to watch, even if we sometimes have the feeling we've seen it before."Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19800101/REVIEWS/1010310/1023

  • Plot Synopsis

Coal Miner's Daughter details the life of Loretta Lynn (played by Sissy Spacek), starting from her humble beginnings as a 13 year-old kid growing up in poverty in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, a backwoods coal mining town. Not yet even a full teenager, Loretta falls for and marries the much older Doolittle Lynn, a rough-talking soldier just returned from WWII. Before long - and still as a teenager - Loretta has a brood of children to take care of and must learn to be a grown-up awfully fast. After being married several years, an intoxicated Doolittle (played by Tommy Lee Jones) gives her a guitar for an anniversary present, challenging her to learn to play. Soon Loretta is composing and performing her own songs, and takes them on the road to local honky-tonks where she gains fame and praise. As Loretta's star rises in the galaxy of country music, she is touched by the friendship of Patsy Cline (played by Beverly D'Angelo). Years on the road and countless concerts leave Loretta weary, but still devoted to her grumbling husband, and always mindful of her Kentucky roots.
